contact infection

Infection resulting from direct or indirect contact transmission of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi or viruses). Direct contact transmission means transmission takes place directly from person to person. Indirect contact transmission involves the environment or a third person. Example: pathogens are transmitted from patient A to an area and from there to patient B via the hands of healthcare staff. In this context, important prophylactic measures include measures of basic hygiene.
