“Pathogen” is a collective term for influences such as microorganisms, toxins and ionising radiation that can cause a disease. “Pathogenic” means “causing a disease”. Pathogens are subdivided as follows:

  • obligate pathogen: always causing a disease
  • facultative pathogen: causing a disease when the host is immunodeficient (immunosuppressed)
