nosocomial infection (also: hospital-acquired infection, HAI)

Infection acquired in hospital. An infection is considered nosocomial when the first signs of infection (day with the first symptoms) occur on the third day after hospital admission at the earliest. Surgical site infections are an exception to this rule: in these cases, the infection is considered nosocomial if it manifests within 30 to 90 days after surgery.
