Five Moments for Hand Hygiene

Moments requiring hygienic hand disinfection to prevent the transmission of pathogens. The situations that call for hand disinfection are summarised in 5 Moments — two “before indications” and three “after indications” — and are based on the 5 Moments model of the World Health Organization (WHO):

  1. Before touching a patient
  2. Before clean/aseptic procedures
  3. After body fluid exposure risk
  4. After touching a patient
  5. After touching patient surroundings

The “before indications” are of outstanding importance for protecting patients from infections, while the “after indications” primarily serve to protect staff and subsequent patients.
