Active ingredient in hand and skin disinfectants that does not evaporate and thus remains on the skin longer to extend the disinfectant’s efficacy beyond the exposure time. However, such an effect has not yet been shown for alcohol-based combination products used for hygienic and surgical hand disinfection. Additionally, remanent active ingredients increase the risk of skin intolerances. Therefore, updated guidelines of the German Commission for Hospital Hygiene and Infection Prevention (KRINKO) no longer recommend the use of remanent active ingredients for alcohol-based hand disinfectants.
In contrast, the positive effect of adding a remanent active ingredient to an alcohol-based skin disinfectant for catheter care could be demonstrated.
