Biocidal Products Regulation (Regulation (EU) No 528/2012)

European regulation on the supply (making available on the market), sale and use of biocidal products. Due to the wide range of possible applications, biocidal products are divided into product types. Products such as disinfectants are intended to protect humans, animals, materials or products from harmful organisms on the basis of their active substances.

The Biocidal Products Regulation also covers biocidal products whose biocidal active substance is only produced on site (in situ).

Before they can be placed on the market, the active substances they contain must be approved and the biocidal products must then be authorised. However, for a transitional period, those biocidal products containing only existing active substances do not need authorisation for being made available on the market in Germany.

In Germany and the EU, disinfectants for hand disinfection and surface disinfection  that are to be newly approved generally fall under the Biocidal Products Regulation.
